Name: Ailean Moray Gender: M Age: 21 Heritage: Scottish and English Social / Political Status: fairly comfortable economically by birth, he gave that up but with luck (and skill, of course) became wealthy enough on his own with his merchant and privateering business / as a very pro-Scottish "traitor" to his English side, he is somewhat of an exile always running from the law, though he is perfectly respectable with his friends in Scotland and France Marital Status: Single Parentage/Ancestry: His father is a post-captain in the British navy, so he has never been at home. Ailean was raised by his mother, the daughter of a Scottish Highlander gentleman, from whom he inherited his strong Scottish sympathies and anti-English sentiments. Profession: Merchant and privateer Alignment: unlawful--depending on who's judging--but good
Personality: Ailean is confident and enthusiastic. He knows the limits of his ship and his crew, however, and while he will make bold moves when they are warranted he will not stake the future of his ship and crew on a whim. He has the admiration and respect of his crew through their trust in his judgment and abilities, but also to a great extent through his flamboyant charisma and the feeling he can give off that he's "one of them." He's fierce--in both fighting and romantic pursuits--and always tense and ready. Charisma/Sanity/Courage: Rather charismatic, automatically makes other people feel like at home with him, able to get people to follow his lead / Sane, but can sometimes get pretty enthusiastic to the point where it doesn't seem so anymore / generally pretty darn courageous, almost to a fault History: Raised in his mothers ancestral home in the Scottish highlands, Ailean witnessed first hand the brutality to the English army in suppressing the Scottish rebellion. His hatred of the English crown was further reinforced by the efforts of his mother, who, in the absence of a father perpetually at sea, provided him with an education that reflected her Scottish sympathies. However, at the age of 12 his father arranged for Ailean's position as a midshipman on the ship of his uncle, also a British captain, to carry on in the naval tradition of the men in his family. Seeing fit to hide his rebel sympathies, Ailean played the part of a loyal officer for years, all the while absorbing all he could of the arts of sailing and leading a crew as well as the fighting strategies of the English, whom he one day hoped to take on as enemies and fight for his country's freedom. When he was 17, Ailean's ship was attacked and destroyed on its way back from the West Indies by pirates. Though his ship's other officers were killed, Ailean and the other survivors were taken aboard the pirate ship as prisoners. However, the pirates themselves had only been victorious due to fortuitous weather and the benefit of surprise, as well as an untimely spark in the British ship's powder storage, and they were in a state of turmoil themselves with most of the crew incapacitated by scurvy and the chaotic power struggle following the loss of their captain, who had been killed in the battle. In these circumstances Ailean was able to lead a successful revolt and take the pirate ship, which he renamed Murdina (which means 'sea warrior'), and sail back to Europe. There he assembled a motley crew whose sole common feature seemed to be anti-British sentiments. One of his first stops was to France, where he took on some more crew members and obtained privateer's papers so that, for the first time, he could "legally" fight the British at sea. In the years since then, Ailean has captained his ship expertly but cautiously, taking out British supply ships as he can and generally hiding from the British under the guise of a merchant trader.
Appearance: Very dark red hair cut not too short, perpetual reddish tan, blue eyes, 5'10ish, huge white scar on his left forearm from a sabre fight (someone else got much more than a scar) Clothing: Nothing scruffy, keeps himself reasonably presentable with leather boots and a heavy wool coat, plain breeches and a sturdy canvas shirt (as well as a suitably impressive hat) Weapons: Carries a saber and pistols on his belt and, like any good sailor, a small multi-purpose knife held on a leather thong around his neck Strength/General Health/Agility: Fit enough, well accustomed to harsh sea life Notable Possessions: the merchant ship Murdina, a small two-masted brigantine, and a modest income from trade and privateering for the French
Friends/Enemies: loyal crew, allies in Scotland and France / enemy of the entire British navy, though when he must come in contact with them he does a good job of hiding his true alliances and can pose convincingly as just another British merchant Skills: sailing (obviously) and general ship management, sword fighting, business, enough French to get by with, can hold his own in a knife fight and he's also not bad at playing the flute Education: fairly good tutors (though any formal education took place a long time ago), excellent sea apprenticeship and experience Religion: raised by devout Christian mother, very superstitious Other information: Ailean is pronounced "Alan." He was named for his maternal grandfather, hence the Gaelic (of which he also has a working knowledge). Quote:"When justice is outlawed, the just must become outlaws" -- the Mask of Zorro
